Today is the hallowed Reformation day, and to honor the reformers rightly means that we follow not necessarily what they believed in but the reforming spirit which they had. It would be deeply ironic if we now reinstate Luther or Calvin as our standard of orthodoxy, as I am pretty sure that they would be aghast at hearing such idea. Barth speaks of the “direction” which we need to follow, even if that direction leads us to places far away from Wittenberg or Geneva. To put it bluntly, even if that direction leads us back to Rome, so what?
