Against comparative thanksgiving

Does anybody else feel uneasy when you read the following type of statement:

“[Example of calamities or really bad things.] And, if you think about it, problems in our life are really small if compared to the [Example.] Seriously, be thankful for what you have right now!”

Somehow I am very uncomfortable about this kind of comparative thanksgiving. You don’t need to be in a “better” position than others do before you praise God, do you.
