A chariot for a family

John Goldingay noted that the word for “a thousand” can also mean “a family”, such that the number of Israelites who went out of Egypt, which was given in Exodus 12 at “six hundred thousand men on foot, besides women and children”, could simply mean six hundred families. Interestingly, Pharaoh sent “six hundred of the best chariots” to chase the Israelites (14.7). So, it’s like a tit-for-tat thing. Whatever you can do, I can definitely equal it.
