Entering CD I/2

A summary of the architecture of Barth’s Church Dogmatics, Volume I/1 and I/2 (which, I think, will be helpful in tracking his line of thought, which is amazingly thorough and comprehensive):

Introduction: On the Task of Dogmatics

The Doctrine of the Word of God

Chapter I: Prolegomena to Dogmatics – The Word of God

The Word of God exists in its threefold form:

  • The Word of God revealed — Chapter II: The Revelation of God
  • The Word of God written — Chapter III: Holy Scripture
  • The Word of God preached — Chapter IV: The Proclamation of the Church

Chapter II: The Revelation of God

  • The Triunity of God: The subject, predicate, and object of revelation in himself
    • God as Creator (will be expounded further in Volume II/1 and II/2)
    • God as Reconciler (will be expounded further in Volume III/1, III/2, III/3, and III/4)
    • God as Redeemer (will be expounded further in Volume IV/1, IV/2, IV/3.1, IV/3.2, and IV/4)
  • The Incarnation of the Word: Jesus Christ as the objective reality of revelation (God for us)
  • The Outpouring of the Holy Spirit: The Holy Spirit as the subjective reality of revelation (God in us)

Chapter III: Holy Scripture

Chapter IV: The Proclamation of the Church
