On celebrating New Year

It still intrigues me how New Year is celebrated wildly around the world. The sheer joy and hope displayed is astounding. The belief that the coming year will be better than the passing one is even more bewildering. Why such joy? Why such hope? Whence and whither such belief? Has not life been hard enough? Indeed, has not life been getting more difficult and more complex each year? Does not our celebration, then, contradict this stark reality? Does it point to Adam’s capacity of living not by sight but by faith? What is the basis of such faith, then? Indeed, does it really need a basis? Or, does it point to our inclination to escape and run away if presented with such option? You know, before we return to the so-called real life?
