“I am YHWH who brought you up out of Egypt to be your God;
therefore be holy, because I am holy.” (Lev 11.45)
I think this is the gist of the book of Leviticus. The first part is fascinating. A god who rescue a people so that he can be their god? The king has shown why he is worthy to be their king, why he merits a proper response from the people. Surprisingly enough, it was God who needs to prove that he is worth the worship due from the people. Moreover, holiness, then, is built upon the foundation of God’s act for Israel. Holiness is the appropriate response within the covenant.
