The mundane God

“They saw God, and ate and drank.” (Exo 24.11b)

This must be one of those bizarre episodes in the Scriptures. They saw God, and ate and drank? Weren’t they supposed to worship him or praise him? They saw God, and ate and drank?! Aren’t those things, uhm, so common? Isn’t God interested in and related with grand things? You know, just like the verse before that, ‘there was under his [God’s] feet as it were a pavement of sapphire stone, like the very heaven for clearness’ (24.10)? They saw God, and ate and drank?!
