Personal and communal

When one said the we should have a personal relationship with God, it is perfectly fine with me. God is personal and relational and hence it is appropriate to have such relationship with him. And yet. One should not forget that the other side of the coin is the communal relationship with God, since God is a communion in himself. The personal without the communal will lead into a hyper-individualistic and escapist religion, while the communal without the personal could lead into a mechanistic and ritualistic spirituality. That’s why we have families, small groups, fellowships, local churches, etc., where we grow together (and hurt each other, sometimes) as a people of God, body of Christ, temple of the Spirit. As the saying goes, what God has joined together, let no man separate.
