The only person who was ever described as ‘the friend of God’ was Abraham (2 Chr 20.7). Hence, when Jesus said to his disciples, “You are my friends” (Joh 15.14), it means that they were the true seed of Abraham. Abraham gave his son of promise, Isaac to his friend, God; and God gave his only son, Jesus, to his friends, the disciples. Indeed: greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends (15.13).
And to abide in such love is reflected in keeping commandments. Abraham has kept YHWH’s commandment, Jesus has kept his Father’s commandments, and now Jesus told his disciples to keep his commandments. And his commandment is for us to love one another (15.10, 17). Hence we have come to a full circle, where love and obedience are intertwined toward each other.
