“YHWH will fight for you, and you have only to be silent.” (Exo 14.14)
We might have qualms about a god who fought and waged war against other nations, but, if you think about it, this particular belief of the Israelites is profoundly different from what we used to think about war in the name of religion. Usually it was the adherents who were fighting on behalf of their god since they think they need to defend their god (think of all those ‘Allahu akbar!’). But it was totally different with the Israelites. They were not fighting in the name of YHWH. It was otherwise. It was YHWH who was fighting for his people.
And the Israelites, have only to be silent.
