Ancient Near Eastern thought and the Old Testament

I have mentioned this book once on this blog and I have just finished it today. And this is the book that you should read to gain a better and richer understanding of our Old Testament. John Walton introduces us to the conceptual world of the people of Israel and how that conceptual world influenced the various facets of the life and belief of Israel. There are three main spheres of life that Walton looked in details: religion, cosmos, and people. For example, on religion, Walton investigated and compared how the Ancient Near Eastern people viewed their gods, what did their temples and rituals signify, and what kind of role did religion play in the state and family life. This book is a good read. You’ll appreciate the nuances of the Old Testament much better than before.
