the purpose of Romans

i.e., one of those one-million-dollars questions (ok it’s certainly overstated, but consider this, today I read the following, ‘the reasons for the compositions of Romans… were… essentially a mystery’ — Douglas Campbell, The Deliverance of God, p. 3). Anyway, according to the Muratorian fragment (written ca. 170-2oo AD — pretty early, right?):

“…and then to the Romans, [to whom] he [Paul] explains that Christ is the rule of the scriptures and moreover their principle, he has written at considerable length.”
