Since the days of the apostles, the worship of the church served as a critical vehicle for imparting doctrina, that is, ordered teaching about the Christian faith. Christian leaders of the early centuries found that worship was a good opportunity to supply believers with the concrete foundations of how to think and live Christianly. There was, in fact, a reciprocal relationship between worship and doctrine, between the act of praise and the task of theology. Like homilies, early hymns and theological poetry were constructive exercises in conveying the tradition.
Given the likelihood of illiteracy among most Christians, learning the faith by recitation in rhyme was essential.

Great indeed, we confess, is the mystery of godliness:
He was manifested in the flesh,
vindicated by the Spirit,
seen by angels,
proclaimed among the nations,
believed on in the world,
taken up in glory.
(1 Tim 3:16)
